How to answer GCSE graph, chart and data questions

A method for questions with a graph, chart or table, so you read it correctly and answer what is asked.

Read before you calculate

  • Read the title, axis labels and units first.
  • Check the scale on each axis. Count what each small square or gridline is worth.
  • For a table, read the column and row headings before the numbers.

Take readings carefully

  • Use a ruler to follow a line across to the axis.
  • Write down the reading with its units.
  • If the question says estimate, a small difference from the exact value is expected.

Answer in context

  • Use numbers from the data in your answer.
  • Say what the answer means for the situation, not just the value.
  • When comparing, make a point about each group and join them with a word such as whereas or higher.

Diagrams in the app

On PrepAcer, many questions show their graph or diagram beside the question. Use the labels and values in the picture, because it is not drawn to scale.

Common slips

  • Reading the wrong axis.
  • Missing that a scale does not start at zero.
  • Forgetting units.
  • Describing a trend when only a single reading was asked for.
