GCSE Maths revision: how to revise for the AQA exams
A topic-by-topic routine for AQA GCSE Maths, and where students most often lose marks.
How the AQA exams are set out
AQA GCSE Maths has three papers: one non-calculator paper and two calculator papers. Foundation and Higher tiers sit different papers, with some overlap in topics. Check AQA's specification for the exact timings and mark totals.
A routine that works
- Start from topics you find hard, not the ones you like.
- Do a short set of questions, mark them, and fix the mistakes the same day.
- Revisit the same topic a week later with new questions.
- Practise non-calculator methods regularly, because the calculator paper is not the whole exam.
Where marks are lost
- Not showing working: method marks are awarded even when the final answer is wrong.
- Rounding too early, or not rounding as the question asks.
- Missing units, or giving an answer in the wrong units.
- Not checking whether the answer is sensible.
